Lorin Ford writes haiku and longer poems from her tumbling-down C19 worker's cottage home in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia. Much of Lorin's early childhood was spent on the foreshore and beach of a Melbourne bay-side suburb. From age nine she lived with her father, who ran the pub in a small East Gippsland timber town. She left school early, at fourteen, preferring a 'glamorous' career in hairdressing to her year 9 correspondence lessons. Later, she received an Honours degree in English Literature and a Dip. Ed. and subsequently taught high school English and ESL. This century, she received a Dip. Prof. Writing & Editing. She has remained an eternal student, enjoying her discovery of new aspects of the world, and of poetry, especially.

Lorin's haiku have been widely published in Australian and overseas journals and anthologies including the Red Moon Anthologies 2008, 2009 and 2010, Montage: The Book and A New Resonance #7. Her credits include first prize in the 6th and 7th paper wasp Jack Stamm awards, in 2005 and 2006, first prize in the Shiki Salon Annual Haiku Awards 2005 - free format category, Winner and runner-ups - The Haiku Calendar Competition 2010, Winner - The Haiku Calendar Competition 2011 and first prize - contemporary category, THF's 'Haiku Now! 2010 Contest'. Her first haiku collection, a wattle seedpod, was awarded first place in the Haiku Society of America Mildred Kanterman Memorial Merit Book Awards, 2009.

Three Lights Gallery published what light there is an online collection of thirty of Lorin's haiku, in 2009, and Mann Library featured her haiku daily in May, 2011. Her short collection, A Few Quick Brushstrokes, is one of the winners of the 2011 Snapshot Press eChapbook Contest. Lorin served on the judging panel for the Haiku Dreaming Australia Awards in 2009 and for The Haiku Foundation's Touchstone Distinguished Book Awards, 2010 and 2011. She was one of the four founding editors of Notes For the Gean and served as haiku editor from its first issue in June 2009 through to its ninth issue in June 2011.

H. Gene Murtha is tanka editor for AHG 1:1. He is a naturalist and poet, was born on October 19, 1955 under the sign of Libra in Philadelphia, Pa. He has won or placed high in a number of haikai contests around the world.

Gene sponsored and judged the first haiku contest for the inner city children of Camden, NJ., for the Virgilio Group, of which he is an lifetime member. With renku partners Bill (Wm. J.) Higginson and Paul MacNeil, he is co-inventor of the single-words shisan renku entitled, Cobweb. His memberships include the Pennsylvania Poetry Society, Mad Poets Society, The Haiku Society of America, Tanka Society of America, HaikuOz and the Nick Virgilio Haiku Association.

Gene's recent awards and publications include: Tanka Splendor Award 2008, Contemporary Haibun 10: Red Moon Press, A New Resonance 6: Red Moon Press, Take Five: Best Contemporary Tanka: Modern English Tanka Press and various print and online journals around the world.

Susan Constable will be tanka editor from AHG 1:2 on. She lives with her husband on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. With Georgia Strait at her doorstep, she enjoys watching a plethora of wildlife, including harbour seals, otters, and sea lions. Black-tailed deer meander through the garden, bald eagles perch nearby, and flocks of seabirds capture her attention on a daily basis.

After editing her school's literary journal in grade twelve, she abandoned creative writing for 35 years. Following the sudden death of her youngest child, however, she returned to poetry as a way to express her grief. For the next decade, Susan explored many forms of poetry, including, glosas, palindromes, sestinas, and cinquains. In 2006, a friend suggested she enter the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival Haiku Contest and, upon receiving Sakura and Highly Commended Awards for her two entries, her love of the form took hold.

In the next three years, she began composing haiga and haibun, then published her first tanka in 2009. Now all four forms are an integral part of her life and have appeared in over three dozen journals. Her work has been featured in New Resonance 6 and Montage, the Book. Susan has acted as a moderator on the AHA Haiku Forum, is still a co-moderator for the AHA Haiga Forum, and she judged the Francine Porad Haiku Contest for 2011.

Although she has been writing tanka for only two years, she's had over a hundred published in a dozen respected anthologies and journals. Several of her tanka have received Reader's Choice Awards, one took third place in the Tanka Society of America's Contest in 2010, and four appear in Take Five: Best Contemporary Tanka, Volume Three.


Melinda Hipple, USA

Melinda Hipple is an award-winning artist, photographer and writer. A native of Missouri [USA], her father was an amateur painter and her mother an avid reader with a true love for poetry and music. These early influences drove Melinda to look for creative connections and venues in every community she lived. Five decades and five states later, she has settled into a vibrant town in Kansas, teaching art and photography classes and honing her writing skills.

Among her many works are two science fiction novels, a mystery novella and several poetry collections including three books of haiku. Recent projects include turning her novella into a screenplay and creating concept art for the movie Black Riders in pre-production. She was the guest editor for a Japanese Short Form section of Pirene's Fountain, Spring/Summer 2011. From September of 2009 until June of 2011, Melinda was the haiga editor and webmaster for Notes from the Gean. She was a past editor and columnist for Up the Creek News, and her published works include haiku, senryu, tanka and haiga.

Melinda's B.A. studies in fine art were interrupted by a 34-year marriage. She hopes to get back to class soon. Meanwhile, she cycles through the creative areas of writing, drawing, painting, belly dancing and just observing human nature and the natural world in juxtaposition. Ray is haibun editor for issues 1:1 (December) and 1:2 (March). He lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In an earlier life he was a university professor but now has moved on to more important tasks: shoveling snow and walking an enthusiastic dog. In his spare time, he plays at photography, writing, tai chi, and wilderness hiking adventures in Willmore Wilderness Park and Utah's Canyon Country. Ray's introduction to haiku was indirect. He photographed and then did a photography website on the Kurimoto Japanese Garden in Edmonton. He wanted to include some Asian poetry with the images. The Internet led him to haiku poets and journals. His next excursion into the haiku world was to create contemporary haiga (photo haiku, digital art haiku) using haiku by the masters and by well-known haiku poets. He then went on a journey of trying to write his own haiku, suffering all the usual feelings of inadequacy and discovering that the world's shortest poem is perhaps the most difficult to compose. Because he liked the expansiveness of the haibun form, he settled on it as his mode of expression with others. When he reads his work aloud, his dog tends to nod off whereas people in a poetry reading audience merely nod and pretend to be alert. For reasons unknown even to himself, Ray maintains his own haiku website with examples of his haibun and which permit readers to nod off without hurting his feelings. Ray has more than 100 haibun, and numerous haiku, haiga and articles published in various haiku genre journals. With Jim Kacian, he co-founded and serves as technical editor of Contemporary Haibun Online. He designed the Haibun Today website and serves there as haibun editor. He co-designed the AHG website and he designed the Simply Haiku website that was used for 7 years. At Simply Haiku, he served as haiga editor and webmaster for several years. He was haibun editor at Notes from the Gean for two years.

Mike Montreuil

Mike will be haibun editor for issues 1:3 (June) onward. He lives in the old city of Gloucester, Ontario, Canada with his family and a trio of tuxedo cats.  His English and French haiku, tanka and haibun have been published on-line or in print throughout the world.  His latest book of haibun  is The Neighbours are Talking (Bondi Studios, 2011).

William

William Sorlien resides in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, with his wife Marian, married 31 years, and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dottie. His hobbies include photography, fronting blues and R&B bands, gardening, and following Engish Premier League football. Recently, he's dabbled in acting, a practice complementing literary analysis and characterization.

William has been a journeyman construction craftsman for nigh onto thirty years. Intending to die with his boots on, economic contingencies in the recent past have curtailed that career goal temporarily. Rather than lament this turn of events, he returned to school to seek a degree in literature and is currently enrolled at Century College where he has been nominated to the honors program. He enjoys being a student again – meeting so many intelligent young people inspires his hope for our communal future.

William began writing haikai and Japanese poetic forms while attending classes in the martial arts with an intent to stay fit. His sensei, a Buddhist practitioner, kept a small lending library in the dojo. After suffering a severe knee injury (kajukenbo can be a rigorous sport!) he had time to peruse some of those tomes on the shelves. Within them he discovered a form of poetry that immediately struck him with its austere beauty and poignancy. Enchanted, he endeavored to write in that style, and over the next year he produced six or seven hundred verses, most of a variable quality. He next turned to the Internet, and, enlightened by what he found there, he tossed aside the bulk of his poems and started over again. He became a member of the World Haiku Club and has been writing Japanese-genre poetics ever since. At the suggestion of his Susumu-Sensei, he became deeply involved in haikai-no-renga.

William has had his haiku, haiga, haibun, tanka and renku published in The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, Haibun Today, Notes From The Gean, Presence, Simply Haiku, Temps Libre, The World Haiku Review, and numerous other venues. A Triparshva renku he led, "The Tiniest Pebble," won first place in the 2010 Journal of Renku and Renga Haikai Contest. He now focuses almost exclusively on renku for the inspiration and knowledge he garners with each collaboration.

John is 28, married and has two young children. He is from Carlisle, Cumbria and has been writing poetry for the past 5 years. John works as a support worker for people with brain injuries and neurological conditions. He is a moderator on The Haiku Foundation Forum and is currently working on a poetry project for children in his local church.

John's haiku and senryu have been published in Asahi, Bottle Rockets, Frogpond, Haijinx, Manichi, Mango Moons, Modern Haiku, Notes from the Gean, The Heron's Nest, Presence and Shamrock. He has also had some of his longer poetry anthologised by United Press. John likes to relax by watching sports, playing Chess and spending time with his family.

Ron is a visual artist, poet and lover of haiku. His poetry has won international awards and been translated into several languages. Ron's art is sold as limited edition-prints and originals. He has been featured in poetry journals and has designed several book covers. Ron lives and works in Tasmania, a small Island State of Australia; a wonderful wild place filled with beautiful scenery and wilderness areas. This influences his creative expression very much and it inspires every day.

Ron considers himself a student of the Zen arts, which have fascinated him from an early age. In his own words, "To me, the path of making art and writing poetry is one of self-exploration. When I create, it's the sum of all the experiences and the explorations I have made in my life so far."

Awards and Other Honors: Ron is one of the featured poets in A New Resonance 5: Emerging Voices in English-Language Haiku (Red Moon Press, 2007). His haiku appear in the Watersmeet Haiku Group Anthology, and his haiga in several editions of Reeds: Contemporary Haiga (Lone Egret Press).
